Volunteers
Volunteers are a vital component to the not for profit sector. Budget limitations impact the ability for organizations to hire staff and fortunately there are individuals who are more than happy to give of their time to support a cause that they are passionate about.
The roles volunteers play will vary from organization to organization, but as with staff recruitment, it is important to ensure volunteers also fit the culture of your organization and that your camp has a clear expectation of how they want volunteers to contribute.
While volunteers are not paid staff, they still require the same structure as staff to ensure smooth operations and ensure that volunteers feel they are involved in meaningful work. This means that camps should ensure:
-
Clear job descriptions with timelines if the job is time sensitive,
-
A resume and cover letter is submitted with references to contact,
-
Interviews are conducted with the candidate,
-
Ensure a recent criminal record check is provided,
-
Volunteers are aware of human resource policies that apply to them in terms of conduct,
-
Support and training is available to them if needed,
-
Ensure that the level of responsibility is reasonable
Volunteers are a reflection of your organization in the market place so it is vital that they embody your values and professionalism to ensure that the best interests of the organization represented.
