Employment Standards
Ensure the disciplinary procedures for your organization are stated in your Policy and Procedure Manual and provided to staff at the beginning of their contract.
The Employment Standards Act of Manitoba can be a good resource for understanding your rights as an employer in terms of disciplinary procedures and termination of employment.
The Human Rights Commission of Manitoba can also be a good reference in understanding what can be grounds for disciplinary procedures or termination.
It is important to be aware of employee rights in such areas as:
-
Ancestry
-
Nationality or national origin
-
Ethnic background or origin
-
Religion or creed, or religious belief, religious association or religious activity
-
Age
-
Sex
-
Gender-identity
-
Sexual orientation
-
Marital or family status
-
Source of income
-
Political belief, political association or political activity
-
Physical or mental disability
-
Social disadvantage
Hiring of Staff under 16 Years of Age
If you are planning on hiring staff who are under the age of 16 years of age, consult the Employment Standards for Young Employees. Employers MUST complete a Child Employment Permit and have it signed by the minor's parents or guardians.
Performance Evaluations
Completing evaluations during the summer and/or at the end of the contract is essential for retaining quality staff. Refer to Standard L10 in the MCA Standards and Accreditation Manual for more information.
